4th Estate has acquired Evelyn Scott’s investigation into gynaecological neglect

Michelle Kane, PR and publishing director at 4th Estate, has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for A Bloody Scandal by Evelyn Scott in a four-way auction from Orli Vogt-Vincent. Described by the publisher as “a blistering and explosive investigation into modern day gynaecological neglect and medical misogyny”, A Bloody Scandal is scheduled for publication in summer 2026.

Kane said: “A Bloody Scandal is a fearless, necessary exposé that gives voice to generations of women silenced by medical misogyny. Evelyn Scott’s work is blisteringly honest, deeply researched and a vital catalyst for change in women’s healthcare and I cannot wait for it to change the lives of its readers!”

Vogt-Vincent said: “Books are so often described as ‘urgent’, but in the case of A Bloody Scandal, it is indisputable. Evelyn urges us to tear apart the archaic script that pain must be synonymous with womanhood; I am proud to know her and to have found A Bloody Scandal its perfect champions at 4th Estate.”

Scott was a teenager when she first began suffering from the symptoms of endometriosis, a condition which affects one in 10 women. For 15 years, she endured “constant, agonising pain, dismissals of hysteria, irresponsible misdiagnoses and a deplorable lack of support”. She came to the conclusion that “with every refusal to take her experience seriously, the medical industry’s position was made clear: to be female is to inevitably live in pain”.

The book’s synopsis continues: “In this searing and deeply personal exposé, Evelyn refutes this narrative and reveals the shocking realities of gynaecological neglect that has left so many women in the shadow of their own bodies. Weaving her own story of debilitating pain with those from others across the world, Evelyn chronicles the systemic failures that are causing harm to women with reproductive conditions globally, from the first period all the way through to treatment and beyond. With unflinching honesty, A Bloody Scandal is an urgent call to action for empathy-led approaches in understanding and treating female pain.”

Scott, a Surrey-based academic, uses her social media platforms to share her daily struggles with severe endometriosis, educating and advocating for the women who follow her.

Scott said: “I am incredibly excited to be able to give a voice to the millions of women who suffer from debilitating gynaecological conditions like endometriosis and shed light on the systems that fail them. I cannot imagine a better publisher to do this with than 4th Estate. Michelle and her team feel as passionately as I do about rewriting narratives around women’s health, and together, I hope to inspire meaningful change.”
