Julia Lovell is lecturer in modern Chinese history at Birkbeck, University of London, a brilliant translator of Chinese literature, and the author of a number of acclaimed works on Chinese history including: The Politics of Cultural Capital, The Great Wall and The Opium War.
Maosim, A Global History won the Cundill History Prize, was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford and the Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize for Global Cultural Understanding in 2019.
Her new translation of Journey to the West Monkey King is out with Penguin Classics in the UK and America.
