Alan Allport
Alan Allport is a British historian whose work focuses particularly on the impact of war on society. He was born in the UK but moved to the United States in 1994. He has taught at Princeton and is currently Walter Montgomery and Marian Gruber Professor of History at Syracuse University.
Alan is the author of Demobbed, winner of the 2010 Longman/History Today Book of the Year award; and Browned Off and Bloody-Minded: The British Soldier Goes to War (2014).
His current project is a major two-volume history of Britain in the Second World War. The first volume, Britain at Bay, was published in 2020 by Profile Books in the UK and Alfred A. Knopf in the US, to wide acclaim, with the Wall Street Journal saying it ‘might be the single best examination of British politics, society and strategy in these four years that has ever been written’.
A Sunday Times History Book of the Year, Britain at Bay was shortlisted for the 2021 RUSI Duke of Wellington Medal and won the Non-Fiction Crown of the Historical Writers’ Association.
The second volume will be published in 2025.
