Christopher Bayly
Professor Sir Christopher Bayly (C. A. Bayly, 1945–2015) was one of Britain’s most distinguished post-war historians of Asia and Empire. He broke new ground in his pioneering use of local sources, offering a different perspective on the relationship between imperial powers and colonies.
Among his many books are Imperial Meridian and The Birth of the Modern World; and, with Tim Harper, Forgotten Armies and Forgotten Wars.
He was awarded the Wolfson Prize for his entire oeuvre rather than a single work, and in 2007 was knighted for his services to history. He died in April 2015.
