Originally from Liverpool, Gemma is a researcher specialising in women’s human rights during pregnancy and childbirth. She originally trained as a lawyer before gaining masters’ degrees in International Human Rights Laws and later in Public Health. In 2023, she was awarded her PhD from King’s College London.

With an eclectic background, Gemma has lived in Germany and Poland and has undertaken all manner of roles from balloon decorator to strangulation homicide researcher and death row intern.

Passionate about unearthing stories of women’s battles against oppression and their fight to be heard, she includes these themes in her academic and non-academic publications. More recently she has turned to textiles as a way of platforming women’s experiences and challenging gender-based violence and is the creator of the touring crochet exhibition Threads of Protest.

When not writing, Gemma can be found at the gym, at her local yarn shop or wandering graveyards tracing her family history.

Gemma now lives in Formby with her husband, three children and two black cats. Her first book will be published in 2027.
