Elena is a science writer from Athens in Greece. She received her PhD from the University of Cambridge where she studied algae – both in their natural environment and for use in biotechnology. After receiving her doctorate she was elected to a research fellowship at Corpus Christi College. She has conducted research at Stanford (on barnacles), MIT & Harvard Medical School (on cyanobacteria) and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (on diatoms).

Elena freelances as a science journalist and is a regular contributor to Nautilus magazine. She writes about a wide variety of subjects, including the intersection between science and art, conservation and expedition science, discoveries in molecular sciences, bioethics, anthropology and AI.

Elena is currently working a debut book on algae and symbiosis.
