Professor David Marquand is one of Britain’s leading political commentators.
His career has included periods in both academic and political life. Following research and teaching posts in Oxford, Berkely and Sussex universities he was elected Labour MP for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, a seat which he held from 1966 to 1977. He was chief adviser in the European Commission from 1977 to 1978, and first Professor of Contemporary History and Politics at the University of Salford from 1978 to 1991. He has recently retired as Principal of Mansfield College, Oxford.
His books include Parliament for Europe, The Unprincipled Society, The Progessive Dilemma, The New Reckoning, Mammon’s Kingdom, and what is widely considered the definitive biography of Ramsay Macdonald.
