Described by J. B. Priestley as the ‘Jane Austen of the twentieth century’, Dorothy Whipple (1893–1966) was the author of nine successful novels, as well as numerous short stories and two volumes of memoirs. Almost all of the novels were Book Society Choices or Recommendations, and two, They Knew Mr Knight and They Were Sisters, were made into films.
