Playing Safe

Helen ran down the steps and went on running about the lawn, testing herself for any signs of weakness and finding none.  Merely, after a few minutes, a dizziness which sent her post haste to the nearest seat.  At least she could still think and hear and see and move according to her will.
Couldn’t she?
Dear Lord, she had been at Hartshorn Manor less than forty-eight hours and for a dreadful moment she had already doubted her sanity.  An absurd moment – if her mind was affected by a drug or drugs, the anguish in her thoughts of Julian and home would be dulled and it was not, it was keener each time it broke her guard.

Nothing must break her guard.  Nothing must prevent her getting successfully away from Hartshorn Manor with the information which would enable Julian to take action and keep them safe.
