Two of our brilliant authors’ work was recognised in this year’s Hawthornden Prize, one of Britain’s oldest literary prizes. Caleb Klaces’ book Mr Outside was awarded the £25,000 prize for his second novel, Mr Outside (Prototype). Colwill Brown was awarded an honourable mention for her novel We Pretty Pieces of Flesh (Chatto).
Judge Emily Berry writes of Mr Outside: “Tender but unsentimental, this is a book about absence and intimacy, gratitude and regret, which asks how we hold our love for one another across incalculable distances, how we forgive, and how we say goodbye: a meditation on the heartbreaking unfinishedness of things.”
The Hawthornden Prize is awarded annually to a British, Irish or British-based author for a work of “imaginative literature” – including poetry, novels, history, biography and creative non-fiction – published in the previous calendar year.
