Piatkus Fiction has pre-empted an “utterly addictive” romantasy trilogy from self-published author Madeline Taylor.
Rebekah West, editorial director, acquired UK, Commonwealth and exclusive European rights for Taylor’s romantasy trilogy, the Verran Isles, from Maddalena Cavaciuti on behalf of Alyssa Morris at Trellis Literary Management. Piatkus will publish the first book, Heir of Illusion, in hardback and trade paperback on 4th November 2025.
The synopsis reads: “Blessed with the power of illusion, Ivy Pomeroy has many tricks up her sleeve. However, none of them are a match for the enchanted collar at her throat that keeps her bound to a ruthless king as his assassin. Forced to play the role of his obedient pet, she plots in secret to destroy him.
“When a mysterious Reaper arrives hunting the same weapon she needs, a reluctant alliance forms. But he’s a danger she can’t ignore, and a desire she can’t afford. As secrets deepen and loyalties blur, Ivy must never forget that, though she may wear a collar, she is not the pet they tamed. She’s the beast they let inside, and she will show no mercy.”
Piatkus dubbed the series “an addictive romantasy world full of secrecy and betrayal, fae and gods and a unique magic system”.
West said: “Heir of Illusion blew us away from the first chapter. Madeline embraces all the fan-favourite tropes, story beats and relationship dynamics while delivering a fresh and captivating spin on them, making the entire series feel new and exciting.
“Packed with jaw-dropping plot twists, a badass FMC [female main character] and a slow-burn romance, this is a page-turner that will keep you hooked from start to finish. We can’t wait to introduce readers to this incredible series and watch them fall in love with Ivy and Thorne.”
Taylor said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Rebekah and the incredible team at Piatkus. Her enthusiasm for Heir of Illusion set the tone for this entire journey, and I am forever grateful that she found me. Getting to start my career with such dedicated and supportive publishing partners is truly an honour.
