Dr Thomas Asbridge is a medieval historian specialising in the study of the Crusades and the broader history of relations between Islam and the West. Currently based at Queen Mary, the University of London, he has previously taught at the universities of St Andrews and Reading.
His first trade book, The First Crusade, was published to considerable acclaim in 2004. In 2010 he published a one-volume account of the entire period, The Crusades, which has been translated into seven languages, and in 2012 he wrote and presented an accompanying three-part television series on BBC Two. In 2015 Tom published The Greatest Knight, an acclaimed biography of William Marshal, and in 2018 a study of Richard I for Penguin’s Monarchs series.
Tom is now working on a major new history of the Black Death, to be published by Allen Lane / Penguin in the UK and Random House in the US.
